Children and Wedding Receptions

Wedding receptions are events that require the couple to establish a guest list.  Within that guest list, one consideration that should be discussed is children.  Ask yourself, do we as a couple desire to have children attend our event?  After all, it is an event of significant importance….and every couple is different.  Some parents enjoy having an “adult evening” out, but others can feel differently and prefer to bring their kids along.  At the end of the day, it is your decision (the bride and groom), and you should do what you feel most comfortable with.  If you are considering giving your guests the option of bringing their children to your wedding reception, you will want to think about a few things like the room setup and food and beverage.  First, be sure to get information from your guests prior to the reception (via RSVP) on how many children they will be bringing…..and what the approximate ages of the children are, so you can determine if they will need a booster seat / high chair etc.  Second, you will want to ensure the wedding reception venue you are working with is able to assist you in creating a child friendly environment.  We have done several weddings here at the Sioux Falls Convention Center with children in attendance, and here are a couple of ideas and tips that seem to work marvelously:

1)      Put together an area of the room (tables separate from the dinner tables) for the children to color / draw / or play with play-dough

2)      Utilize a smaller / separate room from the main wedding reception space, as a “kids lounge” – play a movie / children’s TV and put some different seating / bean bags etc. in there so the kids can spread out and be comfortable

3)      Have a special “kids buffet” –   build the buffet lower to the ground (short buffets), actually at kid level so they can dish up their own food and see what their options are….instead of having their parents dish up their plates

4)      Have the DJ do a kids activity on the dance floor, such as the electric slide

5)      Kid friendly food is a must!  You don’t want to pay for meals that the kids won’t eat / like, so discuss options with your reception venue.  Items like:  mini corn-dogs, French fries, macaroni and cheese, mini pizzas, or grilled cheese are all big hits.  Your biggest problem will be keeping the adults out of the kids food J

6)      Try to have the kids fed first…..everyone knows that children become irritated when they are hungry

If you want to include children at your wedding reception, give me a call today and I would be happy to assist you in putting together an event for ALL of your guests to enjoy!
