Setting the tone for an event is of utmost importance, especially when it comes to a once in a lifetime event like a wedding reception.  How do you achieve “the tone” you want to portray?  Details, details, details.  All of the little distinct touches assist in producing an overall atmosphere/ambiance for you and your guests to enjoy.  If you are looking to achieve a formal feel at your wedding reception, the best place to start is with the food service.  Hands-down, a plated meal gives the perception of a more elegant event.   Plated meals are served to each guest after the group is seated.  The servers typically start with the first course (which is traditionally a salad or soup).  It is customary to serve the guests from their left, and remove the dishes from the guest right.  Next is the actual plated meal (or entrée).  Traditionally, the plated meal will include the following:  a vegetable, a starch, and a protein.  If you are not knowledgeable in the area of food and beverage, it is ok to ask the catering team for help or advice.  Some menu items might be more popular (go over better with a majority of people), and others might be more attractive as far as food presentation than other menu options.  Budget can also be a factor in which entrée items will work best for your wedding reception.  The choice of accompaniments (vegetable and starch) should also be a consideration.  Some items pair up better with certain entrees.  Taste, colors, and textures should be considered.  It is important to consider the final product your guests will receive, overall look of all items on the plate together.  Plated chicken meals are generally a safe choice in regards to guest satisfaction and budget friendliness.  Another way to “dress up” your event especially when you have selected a plated meal is to add a menu card to each place setting.  The menu card prepares/educates your guests as to what will be served, and also naturally creates interest with the tantalizing food descriptions.  In addition, a menu card epitomizes class and sophistication….and for an event such as a wedding, can also be personalized to tie into the color theme/décor.  I personally adore the menu card idea, and like to assist brides/grooms in strategically integrating them.  Here at the Sioux Falls Convention Center, our team can offer you many suggestions for innovative ways to display your menu card.  Whether it is placed inside of the actual napkin (the sleek menu pocket fold), or rolled/folded uniquely and placed cleverly on the table….menu cards can peak interest and contribute to overall design.
