Pre-receptions are exactly what they sound like….the time in between the wedding ceremony and the actual start of the wedding reception.  There are many elements that you can incorporate to provide your guests with an enjoyable and relaxing experience for this portion of the day/evening.  Some ideas are:  food (appetizers can be displayed or butler passed), drinks/cocktails, music (live music or piped in house music), guestbook signing, children’s activities (if you have a lot of guests who will have their children with them), and slideshows of the couple.  The pre-reception can also be referred to as a cocktail reception or social hour.  Sometimes the actual room for the wedding reception will be utilized for this portion of the evening; however another popular option is to utilize a space just outside of the banquet hall space.  This space is called a pre-function area.  Some venues will not have a pre-function area available, so if this is something that is important to you (the pre-reception/cocktail reception) be sure to take note of that as a possible option when you are touring the facility.  Here at the Sioux Falls Convention Center, we have a very large/beautiful concourse area that can certainly be utilized for this.  The concourse just outside of the ballroom space can be setup with tall cocktail tables, bars, and décor.  This area has extremely high ceilings and windows that let the natural light in for a desirable ambiance, and plenty of space to mix and mingle.  This is a great way to give your guests the opportunity to socialize in a very comfortable area, and also unveil the wedding reception area when the bride, groom and wedding party arrive for a fabulous grand entrance!  I think that pre-function spaces are often over-looked and under utilized, and they can create an easily flow and elegance.
